Learning Experience with Linux Foundation


The Linux Foundation was established in 2000 under the name Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). It became the organization it is today when OSDL merged with the Free Standards Group (FSG). The Linux Foundation is the organization that sponsors Linux creator Linus Torvalds and lead maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman. It is supported by members such as AT&T, Cisco, Fujitsu, Google, Hitachi, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Meta , Microsoft, NEC, Oracle, Orange S.A., Qualcomm, Samsung , Tencent, and VMware, as well as developers from around the world.

Timelines

  • Mentorships available on LFX Mentorship: mid-January

  • Mentee applications open on LFX: approximately 4 weeks

  • Mentee application review and acceptance approximately 2 weeks before the term begins.

Learning

  • Installing the first Linux module to run the upstream kernel on my own machine.

  • The first patch is being written to make it into the Linux kernel.

Community

  • Throughout the program, you will be helped by a large community.

  • Maintainers' guidance on bug hunting till patch acceptance upstream.
